The À La Glow Journal
My grandmother had three products on her bathroom shelf. A bar of soap, a jar of cold cream, and something in a blue tin that I am pretty sure was older than me. Her skin was luminous well into her eighties, and she never once uttered the phrase “seven-step routine.”
The Ten-Step Lie
I think about that shelf a lot. I think about it every time I scroll past another influencer layering toner over essence over serum over ampoule over moisturizer over oil over SPF, narrating the whole thing like a chemistry lecture nobody asked for.
I think about it every time a teenager messages me in a panic because she used an acid exfoliant she saw on TikTok and now her face is on fire. Something went very wrong. And honestly? A lot of it is being sold to us on purpose.
Here is the thing the beauty industry rarely says out loud: a ten-product routine does not automatically serve your face. Every extra “essential” step can become another SKU, another revenue stream, and another chance to confuse product accumulation with actual care. That is not a conspiracy. It is just business dressed up as self-care.
Your skin is an organ, and its outermost layer works as a barrier. It is capable, self-regulating, and not asking to be overwhelmed every morning and night. It needs thoughtful care, not a product pileup.1
Happy National Lazy Day, by the way. Consider this your permission slip to do less. It lands on August 10 this year, and frankly, your bathroom shelf may deserve the holiday too.3
Your Barrier Does Not Need More. It Needs Better.
When I built À La Glow, I was not trying to create a minimalist routine just for the aesthetic of a clean shelfie. I was trying to solve a real problem: my own wrecked skin barrier after years of doing too much and believing the industry when it told me more was more.
Stripping it all back was terrifying at first. But when I began formulating with waterless, barrier-first principles, concentrated botanicals, no filler water, and no unnecessary steps, my skin responded. Not because I found some miracle ingredient. Because I stopped attacking my face and started supporting it.
That is the philosophy behind our two-product system. It is a deliberate pair designed to replace a crowded routine without asking your skin to juggle a dozen competing ingredients. No toner. No essence. No “but wait, you also need this.” Two products. Done.
Less does not mean careless. Dermatologists advise gentle, non-abrasive cleansing, resisting the urge to scrub, and using moisturizer when skin is dry or itchy. That is not boring. That is the foundation.1
“Doing less is not cutting corners. It is finally listening to your skin.”
Back to School, Not Back to Bad Routines
This one is personal for me. With back-to-school season coming up, I am already seeing the posts: parents asking what skincare routine their thirteen-year-old needs, and the answers can be alarming. Retinol for a teenager? Strong exfoliating acids on skin that is still developing? Not as a default, no.
Current American Academy of Dermatology guidance is refreshingly direct: simple, age-appropriate products are the safest place to start. For tweens and teens, that foundation is a gentle cleanser, fragrance-free moisturizer, and broad-spectrum sunscreen. The same guidance says retinol, vitamin C, and exfoliating acids can cause redness, burning, and peeling in young skin, unless a board-certified dermatologist recommends a specific treatment for a specific concern.4
Teens do not need a complicated routine. They need room for their skin to do its job, plus support that is realistic, gentle, and consistent. That is exactly why we created the Teen Dream Duo: a simple two-product system for younger skin that is figuring itself out. No harsh-actives pileup. No fragrance gimmicks. Just barrier-first care that teaches good habits early instead of damage control later.
Because the best skincare lesson we can give the next generation is this: your skin is not a problem to be solved. It is a living system to be respected.
Less Product. More Skin.
My grandmother did not know what a skin barrier was. She just knew not to mess with what was already working. Turns out that intuition was more advanced than most of what the beauty industry has sold us in the decades since.
Doing less is not laziness. It is the most radical, honest thing you can do for your skin right now.
